Darren Bent has suggested that Arsenal should look at signing Gary Cahill on a free transfer this summer after leaving Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England striker says that the 33-year-old’s age might go against him but that in terms of experience at the highest level there are few better centre backs out there.

Cahill’s time at Stamford Bridge came to an end in successful fashion, the Blues securing the Europa League title before his contract came to an end ahead of the summer.

The 6ft 4in giant is still without a club heading into the new season and Bent says he is surprised someone like the Gunners have not pounced for his capture to bolster their back line.

“It’s quite surprising not more people have moved for him, even someone like an Arsenal,” Bent told Football Insider.

“As a defender, as an out-and-out defender, he’s good Cahill, he’s one of the best. He’s experienced, he’s won the biggest trophies in the game – Champions League, Europa League – played for England.

“He’s slightly older, maybe that’s the reason.”

Arsenal have already recruited one new centre back in the shape of William Saliba from St Etienne this summer but face an uncertain week regarding the future of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny, the pair both linked with moves away from north London.

In other Arsenal news, Danny Mills has suggested Arsenal could make a shock raid for one of Tottenham’s top players.
