Darren Bent has ripped into Tottenham after they reportedly offered Japhet Tanganga a £15,000-a-week contract.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the terms are “out of order” and “disrespectful” for a player who has emerged as a top talent in north London.
The Athletic claim that contract talks have stalled between the club and the 21-year-old – who is currently on £1,000-a-week – with the Lilywhites said to have offered a £15,000-a-week deal.
Bent admits that Spurs are not the biggest spenders in terms of wages but insists their offer to Tanganga is insulting considering his performances so far.
Bent told Football Insider: “Of course he deserves more than that – £15,000-a-week? There’s players in Chelsea’s reserves that are on double that and Tanganga’s played first-team games.
“For me, that’s out of order, that’s disrespectful. I was at Spurs and I know that – it’s no secret – they’re not the biggest of payers. They pay well for a normal man who’s got a normal job, yeah, they pay unbelievably well.
“But when you look at the teams around them, they pay notoriously low. That there, Tanganga at £15,000-a-week, it’s not good enough.”
Tanganga has played 11 times for Spurs’ senior side after coming through the youth ranks in north London.
A versatile defender, he has featured as a centre-back and a full-back on both flanks under Jose Mourinho.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs have been backed to make an “amazing signing” compared to Bruno Fernandes.
