Paul Merson: PL giants should make move for Tottenham star

By Harvey Byrne

Outspoken pundit Paul Merson has told that Manchester United are a “Harry Kane short” of completing their team and has shared that they should consider a bid for the Tottenham star.

The Premier League giants are said to be in the market for a forward this summer following the long-term injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and they have been heavily linked to both Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid and Everton star Romelu Lukaku.

However, while also naming Griezmann, Merson believes that United are missing a player like Kane, who has claimed the Premier League’s golden boot in the last two campaigns.

“I think Man Utd are well short, I think second favourites at the moment,” Merson told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“Probably a Griezmann or a Harry Kane short, I think if you’re paying £90m for Pogba, I think Harry Kane could take a bid.

“The problem with Man Utd is they’ve got to buy players that are proven in the Premier League.

“I thought Pogba was going to be a great player but you don’t want to bring players in where it’s going to take a year for them to settle.

“So for me Harry Kane ticks the box, I think they might dip their foot in the water there and say: ‘Right, lets see if we can get Harry Kane for £70/80m’.”

Kane has emerged as one of the Premier League’s best players after making his debut appearance for Tottenham back in 2011 for a Europa League qualification match against Hearts.

The 23-year-old has since returned 99 goals in 165 appearances in total for Spurs and still has much of his career left.

Last season saw the England international strike a stunning 29 goals in 30 Premier League outings for Tottenham and he played a crucial part in helping Mauricio Pochettino’s side achieve a second placed finish.

He is however still contracted to the north London club until 2022 and Spurs are unlikely to let him leave without putting up a very strong challenge.
