Tottenham fans will be intrigued to know that Paul Merson has predicted Chelsea to beat Middlesbrough 3-1 on Monday night.

The former Arsenal man has also backed Spurs to beat their London rivals West Ham on Friday evening which would reduce the gap at the top of the table to just one point.

However, Merson thinks that the Premier League leaders will once again extend that lead to four points against their north-east opponents.

Managerless Middlesbrough, who are currently sitting in the relegation zone, will travel to Stamford Bridge looking to cause an upset.

Merson has backed Boro to score at the Bridge but he explained why that goal won’t be enough for the away side.

“Middlesbrough went down in the game against City in a blaze of glory,” Merson told Sky Sports. “We saw something from them in the game that we haven’t seen for a few weeks. The problem is they have to win this game and it could leave them open at the back.

“That’s perfect for the way Chelsea are set up and I can’t see them being stopped, especially in front of their own fans at Stamford Bridge. I do fancy Middlesbrough to score but it won’t be enough to halt Chelsea.”

At this moment in time, Chelsea are leading second-placed Tottenham by four points with four matches of the season remaining, including those to be played at the weekend.

Both London clubs were victorious during their last fixtures, with Antonio Conte’s side picking up an impressive win at Everton last Sunday afternoon.

Spurs responded to that win later on that day by beating their bitter rivals Arsenal 2-0 in what was the final north London derby to be played at White Hart Lane.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side now have the chance to put the pressure on their title rivals by beating West Ham a the London Stadium.
