Paul Merson predicts Liverpool v Sunderland

By Dominic Toner

Paul Merson has predicted Liverpool to record a comfortable victory over Sunderland in the Premier League.

The Merseyside club travel to relegation-threatened Sunderland on Monday and could close the gap to league leaders Chelsea to just three points, with their title rivals not in action until Wednesday against Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be strong favourites despite playing away from home and have been in great form recently.

They have picked up 13 points from their last five league games and defeated Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday.

Sky Sports pundit Merson expects Sunderland to play into Liverpool’s hands in the match.

“This is a perfect game for Liverpool and I can’t see anything but an away win because Sunderland need to go for three points and that will play into Liverpool’s hands,” Merson wrote on Sky Sports’ website.

Merson has tipped a comprehensive 3-0 scoreline in Liverpool’s favour at the Stadium of Light.

The Reds defeated Sunderland 2-0 at Anfield in the reverse fixture at Anfield in November, with Divock Origi and James Milner scoring the goals in that game.

They will be expected to record another victory on Monday and have emerged as serious title contenders this season.

Chelsea are currently in pole position after winning 13 consecutive league games and looking rejuvenated under manager Antonio Conte, but Liverpool are continuing to apply some pressure in second.

Klopp’s team will be desperate for maximum points against Sunderland as they try to set themselves up for crucial fixtures against Manchester United and Chelsea in January.
