Phillips backs Liverpool to seal 'magic' Niguez signing after bid reported

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez would be a “great replacement” for Georginio Wijnaldum at Liverpool.

That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ reported pursuit of the 26-year-old this summer.

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (12th July), Jurgen Klopp’s side have had an opening bid of £35million rejected by Atletico Madrid for Saul Niguez.

The centre-midfielder’s position in the Spanish capital is in doubt following the arrival of Rodrigo de Paul on Monday.

Saul still has five years remaining on his contract with Diego Simeone’s side, having signed a nine-year deal in 2017.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Niguez, Phillips said: “He could be a great signing and replacement for Wijnaldum.

“It sounds like they’ve been admirers of his for a long time so they will have done their homework on him. He is coming from the champions of Spain as well, let’s not forget.

“Liverpool will have a lot of the ball next season and he is someone who possesses that little bit of magic.

“I think it could turn out to be a really good replacement if they can get him in for money that’s not ridiculous.”

Saul Niguez made 41 appearances last season for an Atletico Madrid side which won their eleventh La Liga title.

However, he was not included in Spain’s squad for the Euros.
