Phillips blasts 'die-hard' Aston Villa fans over Grealish wrangle after confirmed news

Aston Villa fans have no right to be angry at Jack Grealish for moving to Manchester City, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Claret and Blue, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, urged the Villa faithful to “put themselves in the shoes” of the 25-year-old before criticising him leaving the club.

Manchester City confirmed the signing of the attacking midfielder on Thursday for a British record fee of £100million.

Grealish made his debut for Pep Guardiola’s side 48 hours later in the 1-0 loss to Leicester City in the Community Shield.

Some Villa fans have been left angered by the departure of the England international, 12 months after he committed his future to club by signing a new five-year deal.

Phillips cannot understand “what all of the hoo-ha is about”.

“I have to be careful what I say here because I live in the area,” he joked to Football Insider.

“The Villa fans need to put themselves in Grealish’s position. This is Man City. When they come knocking on your door, as a Villa player, you go. It does not matter what you’ve said in the past.

“It is like when you see top class players at some of the biggest clubs in the world leaving for Barcelona or Real Madrid and that is because when they come knocking, you go.

“It is a big chance for Jack Grealish. I would get the anger from fans if he was 20, 21 but he’s not. He will win trophies at Man City. Will he win trophies at Villa? He might win an FA Cup but he’s not going to win a Premier League or a Champions League.

“I do not see what all of the hoo-ha is about. If the die-hard Villa supporters put themselves in his shoes, they would go. It is as simple as that. If anyone says differently, I don’t believe them.”
