Phillips 'cannot believe' Matic decision after 'ridiculous' Man United footage emerges
Kevin Phillips has claimed “it is ridiculous” how Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic was available for selection against Aston Villa.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa and Sunderland striker is adamant the 33-year-old should have been sent off against West Ham in midweek.
Matic was an unused substitute in Man United’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.
The centre-midfielder started the midweek EFL Cup loss to West Ham and perhaps should have been sent off for kneeing Vladimir Coufal in the groin.
However, referee Jon Moss missed the incident and with VAR not in use at Old Trafford on Wednesday night Matic escaped without punishment.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the challenge, Phillips said: “It’s a sending off all day long.

“It is just ridiculous how he didn’t get sent off. I cannot understand why he didn’t.
“The only reason would be if the referee has completely missed it.
“It was a bit of a niggly match and there was a few challenges from both sides which could have been interpreted differently.
“The knee from Matic was a straight red for me though. It was retaliation. How the ref missed it I don’t know.”
Matic would likely have been handed a three-match ban if he was sent off against West Ham.
The Serbia international has made six appearances across all competitions for the Reds Devils this season.
