Phillips delivers verdict on Liverpool signing spree after 'amazing' £60m news

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would rather have had £60million to spend on players in the summer than an expansion of Anfield.

That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the money set to be spent on the Anfield Road end.

Liverpool confirmed plans to add 7,000 more seats to the Anfield Road end will “move forward”, with an official ground-breaking ceremony planned for next week.

According to the Liverpool Echo (22nd September), the redevelopment will cost around £60million.

Phillips suspects the expansion of Anfield is one of the reasons for the Reds lack of spending in the summer transfer window.

“When you look round at the clubs at the top, Liverpool’s ground needs to be bigger,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“The owners would not do it unless it was commercially beneficial. They are not daft.

“It’s an amazing stadium and the new main stand has been a fantastic addition. Adding another 7,000 fans will make the atmosphere better and generate more income.

“It brings Liverpool up in line with the big grounds in the country such as Old Trafford, the Emirates and places like that.

“I’m sure Klopp would rather have the money to spend on players though. Maybe that was one of the reasons they didn’t spend money in the summer. Expanding the ground does not come cheap.”
