Phillips in awe of 'amazing' McGeady after Sunderland contract update
Kevin Phillips is over the moon to hear Aiden McGeady wants to stay at Sunderland despite offers from elsewhere.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed the “amazing” 35-year-old likely wants to remain on Wearside to play regular football next season.
According to The Northern Echo (20th June), the winger has received a number of offers from other clubs but would like to remain with the Black Cats if a new deal can be finalised.
McGeady is one of Sunderland’s longest serving players, having joined the club from Everton in the summer of 2017.
Phillips claimed it would be “a big coup” if the 92-times Republic of Ireland international commits to a new contract on Wearside.
“It sounds like he wants to stay for the right reasons which is great,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Nobody can question his ability because he is an amazing player. We saw that last season.
“If he is to sign a new deal you would like to think he can have a right good go next season and finally get Sunderland promoted.
“It must be tempting when Championship clubs want you and are offering perhaps more money than you are being offered by Sunderland.
“I doubt it is about money for McGeady now though. He has earned a lot over the years I imagine.
“For him, it is probably about playing week in, week out. He knows if he stays he will do that.
“We know he is one of, if not the best player in the league. If he re-signed and continued the form he showed last season then it would be a big coup for Sunderland.”
McGeady contributed 16 assists and four goals during the 2020-21 League One campaign.
No player in the division created more goals.
