Phillips: Sunderland could sign 20-goal Wyke replacement for nothing after report

Kevin Phillips has backed Sunderland to sign Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott on a free transfer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed the 27-year-old could be ideal replacement for Charlie Wyke.

Pigott has just days to run on his contract at Wimbledon and is set to leave the club as a free agent this summer.

The Portsmouth News claimed on 23rd June that Sunderland are prepared to offer the centre-forward big wages to secure his signature.

This site revealed on June 25th that Wyke is edging closer to a move to Celtic after talks earlier this week. with the striker “keen” on a switch.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Pigott would be capable of filling the void, Phillips said: “His stats speak for themselves.

“A record of nearly one in two is a great strike rate.

“My only worry is, coming from Wimbledon, can he handle the pressure of playing for Sunderland. No disrespect to Wimbledon but Sunderland is a big step up.

“I haven’t seen too much of Pigott but the lad can score goals, that is clear.

“He could be the man to replace Charlie Wyke next season because it looks as if he will be moving on.

“If Lee can get Pigott in and he scores a lot of goals for Sunderland he will be a hero straight away.”

Pigott scored 20 goals in 45 League One appearances last season.

Only Jonson Clarke-Harris, Charlie Wyke and Jerry Yates scored more.
