Phillips thrilled by O'Nien news after Sunderland update
Kevin Phillips is over the moon to hear Sunderland are confident of securing Luke O’Nien on a new long-term contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed the 26-year-old is the out-of-contract player the club will want to keep more than any other.
O’Nien‘s current deal is set to expire at the end of this month.
Football Insider revealed on 24 June that the club are close to agreeing an extended agreement with the versatile defender following talks this week.
There is hope a new contract will be signed before Lee Johnson’s side return for pre-season.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to the development, Phillips said: “It’s great news to hear.

“He is the probably the player Lee Johnson wants to keep more than any other really.
“He loves the football club and he plays with his heart on his sleeve. You can tell that he cares and that is a big thing.
“Not only that but he is a fantastic player who will do a job wherever you put him on the pitch.
“Out of all of the players who are out of contract, he was the one who the club were probably most desperate to keep.
“It will be great if they can get that over the line because then they can concentrate on other areas. It would be a big boost for the club if he signed a new deal.”
