Phillips in awe of 'top-class' Ndombele after Tottenham footage emerges

Kevin Phillips has claimed Tottenham fans saw “the best and the worst” of Tanguy Ndombele against Wolves.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner is adamant the 24-year-old is a “top-class player” after watching his “brilliant” goal on Wednesday night.

Ndombele was in the thick of it at Molineux as Spurs progressed to the last 16 of the EFL Cup on penalties following a 2-2 draw in normal time.

As shown by Tottenham on Twitter, the centre-midfielder scored a sublime solo goal to give the visitors the lead after just 14 minutes.

Ndombele has been on the fringes of the Spurs team this season and was initially frozen out by Nuno Espirito Santo after making it clear that he wanted to leave the club in the summer.

However, he has been recalled to the team over the last week and Phillips believes a run of games is exactly what Ndombele needs.

“You saw the best and the worst of Ndombele last night,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“I have always backed him. I really think there is a player there. We saw that under Jose Mourinho last season.

“His goal was brilliant. But then he was at fault for Wolves’ goals.

“He should have never have been marking [Leander] Dendoncker for the first goal but of course he could have done better. Then for the second he had his pocket picked. It was sloppy to get robbed of the ball.

“We saw the best and the worst of him but personally, I think he is a top-class player. If you get him in the right areas he can hurt teams.

“From speaking to Spurs fans, they want to see him playing every week. He probably just needs a good run in the side.”
