Phillips issues Willock warning to Newcastle fans after 'brilliant' news

Kevin Phillips has told Newcastle fans to not put too much pressure on new signing Joe Willock.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the midfielder moved to St James’ Park on a permanent basis.

Newcastle confirmed the capture of Willock on Friday (13th August) after hunting his signature all summer.

Willock, 21, spent the second half of last season on loan at St James’ Park and found a new lease of life.

He scored eight goals in 14 games for the Magpies and this site revealed in April how Willock had expressed a desire to return to the North East.

Willock’s impressive performances in May won him the Premier League Player of the Month award.

Phillips insists it is a brilliant move by Newcastle but he also urged a degree of caution.

“One word, brilliant,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Bruce will be delighted, it’s a great signing. We know he was the priority.

“Willock clearly loves playing up there and the fans are back so that will be a whole new experience for him.

“There is a certain amount of pressure, there will be people who expect him to carry on that goalscoring form.

“He’s a quality player and he will score goals but you can’t put too much pressure on him to repeat what he did last season.”

Willock was not registered in time to play in Newcastle’s season opener against West Ham.

The midfielder was unveiled before kick off as the Magpies went on to lose 4-2.
