Phillips shares 'massive' Hume verdict after Sunderland contract update reported
Kevin Phillips is desperate for Sunderland defender Denver Hume to put pen to paper on a new contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend claimed “next season will be massive” for the 22-year-old and his development as a player.
Hume is one of a number of players who’s contract on Wearside expires at the end of this month.
According to the Sunderland Echo, the club are awaiting a response from the left-back on the new deal they have offered him.
He was limited to 26 appearances across all competitions in the 2020-21 campaign after suffering a hamstring injury which ruled him out for nearly four months.
As quoted by the Sunderland Echo, Black Cats boss Lee Johnson clearly has big plans for Hume after he described him as “an exciting project”.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Hume’s future, Phillips said: “Next season will be massive for Denver Hume.
“It is important he plays regularly and improves under the guidance of Lee Johnson.
“We all hope he puts pen to paper because he is an exciting player who knows the club well.
“Could he one day play in the Premier League? It’s not out of the question for him because he is young and talented but realistically you do not know until you get there.
“It would be great news if he signs a new deal because he is the best option at left-back next season.”
