Phillips suggests behind-the-scenes Liverpool issues after 'shocking' Klopp reveal

Kevin Phillips insists Jurgen Klopp has earned the right to be upset by the lack of transfer activity from Liverpool this summer.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the Reds boss’ situation.

On Tuesday (27th July), Football Insider revealed Klopp has told friends he is “unhappy” with Liverpool’s current transfer situation.

Liverpool have only signed centre back Ibrahima Konate this summer after they failed to defend their Premier League crown last season.

Phillips claims Klopp can be rightfully annoyed after all the success he has brought to Anfield during his tenure.

“He has every right to be upset,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s also earned the right to be upset after everything he’s done for that football club.

“Why would you try and upset Jurgen Klopp unless there are underlying issues?

“I can’t imagine there are but you never know. Just keep him happy, give him the money. That’s shocking.

“He has to be allowed to go out and sign the players he wants. It’s frustrating for him.

“Look at the drop off last season, he wants to be challenging this season.

“Man City can probably get away without signing anyone, Liverpool can’t.

“In that midfield area, Henderson isn’t getting any younger and Wijnaldum’s gone, they need more in there.

“I’m very interested to see what happens over the next few weeks now.”

On 19th July, The Athletic reported that no progress has been made over a new contract for Henderson, 31.

Two years ago, the midfielder became the first Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League trophy.
