Phillips suggests 'gentleman's agreement' for new signing as West Ham seal Areola deal
Kevin Phillips claims Alphonse Areola may have a gentleman’s agreement with West Ham regarding his playing time after signing for the club.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the Hammers confirmed their new arrival.
As confirmed on Thursday (July 29th), Areola has joined West Ham on a loan-to-buy basis from PSG.
However, as revealed by Football Insider (July 29th), the Frenchman was Moyes’ second choice behind West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.
The club did not want to spend big on a new shot-stopper and only bid up to £11million for the England keeper.
West Ham face a congested 2021-22 campaign as they challenge in the Europa League as well as in the three domestic competitions.

Phillips admits it will be a challenge to keep Areola and Lukasz Fabianski happy this season.
“I would never argue against David Moyes’ judgement,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“As long as you can keep both goalkeepers happy.
“It might be one of them where there’s a gentlemen’s agreement that they will be rotated a little bit.
“I’d be very surprised if that was the case, that could upset things. It’s about keeping two quality goalkeepers happy.
“If you can do that as a manager, it’s great news. It will be interesting to see how often they chop and change.
“Naturally that will happen in Europe and with the cup games but it’s great for them to have that position sorted.
“They can now concentrate on other areas of the pitch.”
Fabianski signed a new one-year deal with the Hammers last season, keeping him at the club until next summer.
He remains an important member of the squad and played a huge role in the club’s impressive 2020-21 campaign.
