Aston Villa have made a six-figure bid for Stoke enforcer Glenn Whelan, according to a reliable journalist.
Telegraph reporter John Percy claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday that the Premier Club have decided emphatically to reject the £500,000 offer but a deal “should happen”.
It also understood that Aston Villa are still in talks with the Potters as they look to add experience to their midfield.

Whelan, 33, has been on the books at Stoke for over nine years since he signed from Sheffield Wednesday in January 2008.
He has since made 337 appearances for the Potters across all competitions and has stayed in Mark Hughes’ first-team plans in the recently-ended campaign.

The 81-times Republic of Ireland international played 31 times in domestic tournaments during the 2016/17 season, mostly as a defensive midfielder, while he can still play in a more central role.
Whelan began his career at Manchester City, but never made a senior appearance for the Citizens before switching to Hillsborough in 2004 after two loan spells with Bury.
He was part of the Stoke team that earned promotion from the Championship in 2007/08 and also helped them reach the 2011 FA Cup final.
Football Insider Verdict
Aston Villa do not really need to make big improvements to their squad this summer. There are certain areas that need building on and a first-team goalkeeper should currently be top priority. However Whelan can bring a wealth of invaluable experience to Villa’s side and his CV boasts a couple of great things. He knows how it feels to earn promotion and that is likely to be the main thing that Bruce wants this summer. Villa were disjointed in the first half of the campaign and around winter as they simply made too many signings. It’s best that the Birmingham-based club keep together their best players and just bring in three of four new faces – with Whelan being one of them.
