PL defender jets out for medical with Euro giants after Celtic open talks - reports

By Harvey Byrne

Manchester City defender Jason Denayer is jetting out for a medical with European giants Galatasaray after Celtic opened talks with the cash-rich Premier League side, according to reports.

Scottish news outlet STV claimed via their website on Wednesday morning that the Hoops had made an approach to City with a view of bringing the 22-year-old centre-back back to Parkhead.

However, Times Sport reporter Paul Hirst has later claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday evening that the Hoops were keen on Denayer, but he is now on his way to Turkey for a medical with Galatasaray after giving the 20-time title winners his word.

Like Celtic, Denayer has previously spent a loan spell at Galatasaray, where he played 28 times in total across the 2015-16 campaign.

He enjoyed vastly more first team football with the Hoops, completing 44 matches in total across the 2014-15 campaign and helped lift the Scottish Premiership and League Cup as well as being named the Celtic Young Player of the Year and PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year.

However, it would now seem his immediate future lies away from Celtic and with Galatasaray.

Football Insider verdict:

This is a bitter blow for Celtic giving their current problems in defence with injuries alongside the lateness in the window. Denayer was a clear success during his previous spell in Scotland, but the Hoops must now start looking elsewhere before it becomes too late for the club and seriously holds Brendan Rodgers’ side back. The Glasgow giants’ aim for this season is to progress to the Europa League at least in their Champions League group and they must now ensure they aren’t lining up with Nir Bitton in their defence against Paris Saint-Germain.
