PL relegation strugglers contact Tottenham over 25-year-old, loan deal mooted - report
Southampton have contacted Tottenham over the possibility of signing Erik Lamela, according to a report.
The Independent report that the Saints have enquired about whether a deal can be done for the 25-year-old and the newspaper believes if Lamela was to leave it would be on loan.
The report believes that AS Roma are also keen on signing the winger, however Southampton are very keen to bolster their squad as they sit 19th in the Premier League and face the real threat of relegation.
The newspaper also think the potential arrival of Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain could see Lamela face a tough task being named in Tottenham’s Champions League squad.
Lamela returned to action for Spurs this season after a thigh injury kept him on the sidelines for over a year, since being back in the fold; he has made 12 appearances.
The 25-year-old who can play on either flank is yet to score a goal this season but has contributed two assists.
Football Insider Verdict:
Lamela is clearly a talented winger who on his day could be starting regularly for Tottenham, however given how long his injury kept him out, it might be best for him to go out on loan. It’s hard to rely on the 25-year-old to deliver performances on a regularly basis worthy of a team challenging for a Champions League spot in the league, as he was out for so long. Lamela has shown glimpses of the player he was before the injury, but with the battle at the top so intense, Tottenham can’t afford to carry him. While it’s true he makes a fantastic addition to games from the bench, the winger needs to be playing 90 minutes in order to get back to his best quicker, so letting him go to the Saints wouldn’t be the worst idea.
