'What a player he is' - Derek Johnstone hails Rangers summer signing

By Harvey Byrne

Former Rangers utility man Derek Johnstone has hailed the summer signing of Ryan Jack, stating he could build a brilliant partnership with potential addition Graham Dorrans.

The 25-year-old midfielder left the second placed Aberdeen side at the end of his contract earlier this summer for pastures new at Ibrox.

He was the captain of the Dons and played a key part as Derek McInnes’ side finished above the Gers.

But, given Rangers’ prestigious history Aberdeen were powerless in keeping their man and now Johnstone believes that Pedro Caixinha’s side have got a great player in their squad.

“I’m also pleased though with the Scottish recruit brought in so far in Ryan Jack. What a player he is, and if they can get Graham Dorrans into that midfield too, then that looks a cracking partnership,” wrote Johnstone in his column for the Evening Times.

“Hopefully the presence of some high quality Scottish players can help ease the transition of a lot of these foreign lads into the team and into the new culture they have been brought into.

“So, I am excited by the names that have come in and with those that have been linked to the club. Yes, we have to have a bit of realism, but the standard of player is certainly superior to what was there before.”

Caixinha has looked to undergo a huge transformation of his squad this summer given the club’s woes in the previous campaign.

He has already brought in Fabio Cardoso, Bruno Alves and Dalcio alongside Jack, while a list of names such as Daniel Candeias, Alfredo Morelos and Dorrans’ have also been linked heavily with a move to Glasgow.

Now, supporters will be hoping that the incoming players such as Jack can capture their previous form at as big a club as Rangers are.

The Ibrox giants will be looking to close the gap on fierce rivals Celtic next season while they will also be looking to go as far as possible in the Europa League.
