'Please sign' - Tottenham fans besiege 28-year-old with messages on Twitter

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham fans have besieged centre-back star Toby Alderweireld with messages on Twitter asking him to sign after Sunday’s north London derby.

The 28-year-old Belgium international started the match against Arsenal at White Hart Lane and played the full 90 minutes, helping his side to a clean sheet and a famous victory in the 2-0 win.

Many Tottenham fans were keen to congratulate him after he hailed the supporters as “brilliant” on his personal Twitter account after the match.

However, there was also another message being sent from the Tottenham faithful on social media with there being doubts over his future at the club after Sky Sports Italy correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio revealed on his personal website that Alderweireld did not want to sign a new contract.

A number of supporters urged him to agree a new deal with the north London club, while others simply posted “please sign.”

Alderweireld has been with Tottenham for two years after joining from La Liga club Atletico Madrid for a fee of £11.5million.

He has since starred in 84 matches for the north London club and is clearly a highly valued member of the squad.
