Mauricio Pochettino will be “absolutely furious” at the instant transformations in the form of Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld at Tottenham since Jose Mourinho was appointed.
That is according to ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how the change of manager has led to sudden turnarounds in the fortunes of senior players.
Alli has been outstanding in each of Mourinho’s three matches in charge following a sudden spell of mediocrity as he lost his regular starting roles for club and country.
Alderweireld had been dropped from the team for the last two games of Pochettino’s reign, but he has been recalled to the side by Mourinho and looked close to being back to his best.
“You don’t need to do too much second guessing to know Poch is absolutely furious over the sudden turnarounds in some of the players,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He’s going to be upset as well.
“It is massively unfair on him that Dele Alli and Alderweireld are suddenly playing so much better.
“Mourinho taking over has been like flicking a switch for both them. When certain players aren’t doing it, sometimes it’s so hard for a manager to get them back playing well.
“Pochettino would have tried everything – the carrot, the stick – to help Alli and Alderweireld rediscover their form.
“Watching them look so good again will be hard for him to take.”
Alli and Alderweireld are likely to remain in the Tottenham starting XI for tonight’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on signing Premier League centre-back in January with £25million sealing the deal.
