Pochettino delivers fitness update on key Tottenham pair ahead of Southampton

By Dominic Toner

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Toby Alderweireld and Vincent Janssen will be available against Southampton.

Spurs travel to St Mary’s on Wednesday for a Premier League clash and will be boosted by the return of two players.

Alderweireld missed the club’s last game against Burnley with a slight back problem as his side completed a 2-0 victory.

Janssen has recovered from an ankle problem and he has not played since the 2-1 defeat against Chelsea on 26 November.

Spurs boss Pochettino has revealed that he will welcome the two players back to his matchday squad against the Saints, but Erik Lamela remains sidelined through injury.

“Toby will be available, he has been training well after his problem with his back, Vincent Janssen will be available too. It’s only Erik Lamela that will still be out,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

Spurs will be delighted to have defender Alderweireld back in contention and he is likely to partner Jan Vertonghen at centre-back.

The 27-year-old will be lining up against former club Southampton, who he spent a season on loan at in the 2014/15 season.

He has become a crucial part of the Spurs defence since he moved to White Hart Lane and is regarded as one of the best in the Premier League.

Spurs will also be pleased to welcome back forward Vincent Janssen as they have looked short of options in attack.

The 22-year-old is still behind first-choice striker Harry Kane in the pecking order, but gives Pochettino a different threat from the bench.
