Redknapp makes shock Tottenham selection for star player this season

By Dominic Toner

Jamie Redknapp believes that Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama has been their star player this season.

Ex-Liverpool player Redknapp has been impressed by the impact of the summer signing and chosen him as the club’s standout man this season so far.

His decision may come as a shock to some people as Spurs have several talented individuals in their squad, including powerhouse centre-back Toby Alderweireld and prolific goalscorer Harry Kane.

Wanyama completed an £11million move to White Hart Lane in the summer from Southampton and has established himself as a regular in the starting XI.

Redknapp claims that the 25-year-old has done exceptionally well to takeover from Eric Dier in midfield and picked him as Spurs’ star man this campaign.

“This time last year you would not have thought anyone could displace Eric Dier but that’s what this powerhouse has done,” Redknapp wrote in the Mail.

Wanyama has managed to break up the settled midfield of Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele, who were so influential last season to Spurs.

The Kenya international has slotted straight in as a defensive midfielder and is currently ahead of team-mate Dier in the pecking order.

Mauricio Pochettino worked with Wanyama during his time at Southampton and is a big admirer of the combative midfielder.

Wanyama has made 23 appearances already this season for Spurs and has started every Premier League game.

The north London club are currently trying to force their way into the top four in the league and face Southampton in their next game on Wednesday.

In other Tottenham news, the club’s supporters reacted on Twitter to reports that their defender is set to sign a new deal in January.
