Tottenham fans react on Twitter to reports that defender set to reach agreement in January

By Amir Mir

Tottenham will reach an agreement with star defender Toby Alderweireld in January – and fans on Twitter have begged him to sign a new deal.

The Mirror claimed on Saturday that the north London club will hand the 27-year-old their next contract extension.

It is stated that the deal is expected to be concluded by the end of the next month with chairman Daniel Levy planning to keep Alderweireld for the next five years.

Many fans on Twitter were in agreement that they wanted the Belgian to put pen to paper on a new deal.

If he does sign on the dotted line, then Alderweireld will follow in the footsteps of teammates such as Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm who have been the most recent players to extend their deals.

The White Hart Lane faithful were hoping that for their last Christmas present their star defender would sign the contract as they bid to finish in the top four once again this season.

One fan did point out that if Alderweireld does not sign a new deal, then his Christmas will be ruined.

Another supporter did state that that with the number of players committing to new deals, it just leaves Alderweireld and his teammate Eric Lamela to follow in their footsteps.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Alderweireld joined Spurs during the summer of 2015, signing for a fee of £11.4 million from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.

Prior to joining the London club, the highly-rated defender was on loan at Southampton, where he impressed the St. Mary’s faithful with his outstanding displays.

He then brought that form to White Hart Lane, helping them finish in a Champions League spot last season as he built a solid partnership with Jan Veronghen at the heart of the club’s defence.

This season, the Belgium international has made 13 Premier League and Champions League appearances, scoring one goal during the group stages of the European Cup.

During those matches, he has helped his team keep six clean sheets, with a knee injury being a reason for his absence during the months of October and November.
