Powerhouse sensation must be top Tottenham target after £120m-plus transfer report
As the season draws to a close, Tottenham fans ought to be penning their goodbye letters to centre back Toby Alderweireld ahead of the summer.
Each day that passes is another which sees the Belgian edge closer to the exit door of the pre-season transfer window – something which seems an inevitability after so much hope he would commit to a new deal.
Nobody knows what is going on behind closed doors, and whether negotiations are still being drawn out, but considering how quiet everything has gone, it seems as though both parties have accepted the fate of the situation and are willing to let the clock tick down until his departure.
So while fans might be mourning the loss of one of their top talents, Mauricio Pochettino has been tasked with sourcing a replacement, and it seems as though he has three names on his list.
The Independent claim that Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles, West Brom’s Jonny Evans and Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt are the candidates to step into the massive boots that Alderweireld is leaving – and that the Argentine manager will have well over £120million to spend in the summer, factoring in the Belgian defender’s own transfer fee.

Of those, there is only one candidate who should be considered – and surprisingly, it is the man with no Premier League experience.
De Ligt, 18, has been something of a sensation at the back for Ajax and his performances with the Dutch giants have led him to eight international caps for his country.
It might be becoming something of a cliche to see an Ajax defender move to Tottenham, after Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez’s moves, but all that proves is that the Eredivisie club produce brilliant defenders.
With his whole future ahead of him, the powerhouse can follow in the footsteps of his former teammates and become an outstanding talent at the heart of defence, and with Sanchez a fellow youngster at just 21, the pair can be a dominant force for years to come.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club are looking at launching a raid on a top flight rival for a double bargain swoop.
