Coventry City make Frank Lampard sack 'plan' after ‘worrying’ start

Coventry City owner Doug King will stand by Frank Lampard for the whole season regardless of an extended relegation battle.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Lampard has enough credit in the bank to keep his job.

Lampard led Coventry back to the Premier League as champions of the second tier last season.

The ex-England star oversaw an expensive summer transfer window at the CBS Arena, with around £126million spent to bolster his squad.

Their new arrivals are yet to yield good results, with losses in each of their first two Premier League matches to Arsenal and Hull.

Doubts could start to emerge around Lampard's position if their slow start to the campaign continues.

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Lampard has the tools to keep Coventry in the top flight this season.

Sources revealed to Football Insider last month that Lampard wanted to sign Chelsea outcast Mykhailo Mudryk, but he was one of several targets that the club missed out on.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that Sky Blues owner King is not likely to sack Lampard even if they are relegated this season.

He said: "I've got to say, I think (there has been) just too many changes, too many new faces coming in. The clubs that have succeeded coming up have normally done it with four or five changes. I think we're up to about 10 at Coventry. So just that little bit too much change. Frank, though, I have a lot of faith in Frank. I like him as a manager.

“But I think after the second international break, I think there'll be grumblings. However, I think Doug Ford, the owner, and the Coventry fans, they all think Frank's got enough kudos in the bank that they'll stick with him. Even if they went down, I think they'd stick with him to bring them back up.

"I think that would be a wise policy for Coventry, because he will learn from this knowledge and experience, and they'll have a stronger squad to look at as well for next year.

“It's going to be a worrying time. (They’ve not had) the best start, but it's not the end of the world. When you're chasing it after those first two games, the third one becomes even more important than it should do. So, yes, I think Coventry have already got an issue and are behind the eight ball.”

Opta's supercomputer forecasts dismal season for Coventry

While Sky Blues fans will be optimistic that Lampard and his players can get going and survive the drop, the current calculations are not in their favour.

Opta's supercomputer is predicting them to finish bottom of the Premier League as it stands, with just over 40 points.

They are currently 40.52 per cent likely to go down, as Fulham and Crystal Palace are also backed to drop into the Championship.
