Frank Lampard is surely edging closer to becoming the first manager to lose their job in the Premier League this season after Coventry lost to fellow strugglers Fulham.

Lampard guided Coventry back to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 as champions of the second tier last season.

The Chelsea legend oversaw an expensive summer window at the CBS Arena, with over £125million spent to bolster his squad across the pitch.

Those new arrivals are yet to properly contribute to a string of good results, with the Sky Blues sat second-bottom of the top flight right now after eight games.

Their latest defeat to struggling Fulham and under-fire boss Alvaro Arbeloa should set alarm bells ringing for Lampard and his staff.

He looks as likely as ever to be the first Premier League boss to lose their job in 2026-27, especially if Coventry are beaten by 20th-placed Sunderland next week.

Frank Lampard walking the tightrope at Coventry after pathetic loss

Lampard's side looked to have turned a corner two weeks ago as they thrashed Newcastle 4-1 to follow their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break.

They look to have reverted to type in the last week, however, with successive losses to Spurs and Fulham leaving Coventry with just six points from eight games so far.

The defeat at Tottenham can be excused somewhat, given the money spent to help Roberto De Zerbi, but it was still a poor showing as the hosts cruised to a first league win of the campaign after the Sky Blues scored with their only shot on target of the game.

This weekend's six-pointer gave Lampard the opportunity to prove his credentials against a Premier League managerial rookie like Arbeloa, but Coventry handed Fulham their second league win of the season with a whimper.

The stats say it all, with Fulham boasting 64 per cent of the ball, more xG, shots on target, touches in the opponent's box and accurate passes across 90 minutes.

Arbeloa's side clearly wanted it more than the hosts, as they covered more distance (121 to 117km), ran more (24 to 23km) and sprinted more (1.9 to 1.7km) too.

Lampard has to get his act together, and fast, with fans growing increasingly concerned at his reluctance to utilise their exciting summer signings like Gus Hamer, Yann Gboho and Stephen Mfuni.

He should be the current favourite to be the first PL boss sacked this season, with the axe surely on its way if they keep struggling in the coming weeks.

What are the latest odds for the next PL manager to be sacked?

Lampard does not even figure among the frontrunners to be the first manager in the Premier League to be sacked this season.

He is priced at 25/1 with several top bookmakers, while Michael Carrick is the widespread favourite, with some odds as short as 4/6 as he struggles at Man United.

Crystal Palace's Pierre Sage is also a contender, at 7/2, while Arbeloa comes in at 8/1 and Regis Le Bris is priced at 14/1.

Lampard may well see his odds tumble in the coming days, and could be out of a job if Coventry are beaten by another fellow struggler, Sunderland, next week.
