Kieran McKenna return to Ipswich could happen as backstory revealed: 'I know the chairman'

Kieran McKenna could return to take charge of Ipswich Town once again in the future.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Northern Irishman is highly unlikely to return to football for another club.

This comes after the 40-year-old stepped down from his role at Portman Road for personal reasons last week, just months before he was due to lead Ipswich back into the Premier League.

Wyness had made it clear that rumours of McKenna moving to immediately take on another job are untrue.

The former Manchester United coach has been highly sought after in recent years, and he has continually been linked with the Celtic job in recent months.

McKenna has led Ipswich to promotion from the Championship twice in the last three years, but will now be taking a break from the game.

Kieran McKenna facing 'severe stress'

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the "stress" that Premier League managers face is "pretty severe."

He emphasised his relationship with Ipswich's chairman Mark Ashton, and noted that McKenna is well within his

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the Scottish businessman made it clear that McKenna's decision was down to little more than "burnout."

"Initially, I thought it was very strange timing. I thought he'd be looking forward to going and having another crack at the Premier League," Wyness said.

"But the more I've heard, and I know the chairman Mark Ashton from his time at Bristol City, and it does seem pretty clear that it is burnout, and I completely understand.

"Having been around the game for a long time, I've been able to observe a lot of the managers, and the stress they are under is pretty severe. Ipswich going up and then down again and back up means you have to readjust so much.

"Mark said that he'd be very surprised if he turned up anywhere else. The rumours were Fulham. That's now been denied. It does seem he needs a break, which is fair enough. And who's to know? He may well return to Ipswich sometime in the future."

Brentford and Ipswich Town in race for Ilan Kebbal as 'talks open' over Premier League move

Ipswich racing Brentford for Ligue 1 star

Football Insider recently revealed that Ipswich are racing Brentford to secure the signing of Paris FC winger Ilan Kebbal this summer.

The 27-year-old notched 14 goal involvements from 31 games for the French capital club last term, and could be about to move to England.

Intermediary Paul McKay, who holds the UK mandate for the Algerian, emphasised that he and the player's camp are already holding discussions with clubs over a move.

He added that Kebbal is very interested in the prospect of playing in the Premier League, which could play perfectly into Ipswich's hands this summer.
