Thomas Tuchel sack verdict: England stance revealed by Sir Alex Ferguson ally

Thomas Tuchel was never facing serious pressure about his job as England manager despite a frustrating end to their World Cup.

The boss came under fire from the supporters given the manner of their semi-final defeat against Argentina, when they invited pressure and ultimatelt succumbed.

England bounced back in the bronze medal game, however, with a thrilling 6-4 win against France which has eased the pressure on the manager and his players.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant and long-time ally, told Football Insider that regardless of the frustrations and backlash, Tuchel's job was never at risk, with the FA keen to back him.

The 52-year-old was handed a new contract by the FA ahead of the World Cup to see him through until after the European Championships in 2028.

Tuchel has received heavy backing despite the frustrations surrounding the circumstances of the Argentina defeat, and despite calls for his head, that was never a consideration.

Why were fans calling for Thomas Tuchel to be sacked?

Football Insider reported on 17 July that Tuchel was coming under fire in his role at England boss, with odds on Eddie Howe to replace him slashed after the semi-final defeat.

England went into the World Cup with lofty expectations, and having come up against a beatable Argentina side, as Spain proved in the final, were disappointed to crash out.

Tuchel's decision to drop back and bring on defensive reinforcements led to plenty of criticism, although he insisted after the game that the players were equally to blame.

"It was never part of the thinking to sack Thomas Tuchel, It will not have even been considered by the FA," Brown told Football Insider.

"Obviously there was a lot of frustration, he could have handled the game better, but it's something they will have to learn from long-term.

"The FA gave him a big new contract before the tournament had even started, so that's a show of how much they believe in him long-term and how they're willing to support him.

"He took the brunt of the criticism after the game, but the defeat is on the players as well, they didn't step up when it mattered and ultimately it cost them.

"But going into the game agianst France, everything felt more relaxed and it ended up being probably the best game of the tournament, so the feeling is already much better.

"They now just need to reset and focus on the future, because Tuchel will lead this team at the Euros and hope for a much better outcome."

What do the FA have planned for Tuchel and England?

Despite growing frustrations leading to calls for the manager to be sacked, that line of thinking was never considered by the FA, who remain keen to support Tuchel.

A clause in his latest contract extension would have opened the door for his departure should England have suffered elimination before the round of 16, but that did not happen.

Instead, former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Tuchel will stay on with England until Euro 2028 and will see out his current contract.

Fans have been urged to cool their frustrations towards the boss, especially in the wake of the win against France, despite what was a frustrating end.

The manager and the players must now learn from their elimination, with focus now set towards the Nations League and the next Euros with silverware in mind.
