Pundit backs Tottenham to sign 'top-class' Romero after terms agreed
Tottenham have set their sights on signing a "top-class player" in Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, according to Paul Robinson.
The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, heaped praise on the 23-year-old but questioned whether he is the leader Spurs so badly need at centre-half.
Tottenham today confirmed an agreement has been reached with Qatari side Al-Duhail for the transfer of Toby Alderweireld.
Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez could follow the Belgium international out of the exit door later in the window as part of a defensive shake-up in north London.
According to Fabrizio Romano (26th July), Tottenham's top defensive target is Cristian Romero and Football Insider understands they have already agreed terms on a contract spread across six years.
Spurs are in talks over a fee but Atalanta's £47million asking price is currently proving to be a sticking point.
When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs if Romero was worth close to £50million, Robinson said:
"You have to trust Paratici's knowledge of the Italian market. In that field he is an expert so he will know if a deal is good value or not.
"A lot of people won't know a lot about Romero. I watched him in the Champions League a couple of times last season and I was impressed. He looks like a top-class player so it will be interesting to see if that one gets over the line.
"Spurs need leaders though. I don't know if there is a language barrier or whether Romero speaks good English but they need someone who is an organiser back there."
