Pundit baffled by 'strange' Sancho decision at Man United pre-Atalanta clash

Noel Whelan has questioned whether Man United needed to swoop for midfielder Jadon Sancho in the summer window.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, branded the 21-year-old’s Old Trafford move “strange” with Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford already established in the position.

Sancho featured from the start during Man United’s 4-2 away loss at Leicester, but the England international was withdrawn on 65 minutes for goalscorer Rashford.

The former Dortmund midfielder had the least touches of any Red Devils starter (38) during the Foxes defeat (WhoScored).

Sancho signed for Man United from German club Borussia Dortmund for a reported £73million in July.

Whelan insisted there will be a “big battle” ahead for the youngster as he looks to fend off competition for his place from fit-again star Rashford.

“It’s strange that they even went for Sancho,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“With Rashford and Greenwood already at the club, did they really need him?

“There’s no doubt that he’s very talented but there’s now a huge array of wide players at Man United and something’s got to give.

“With Rashford coming back, you have to say that Sancho is down the pecking order.

“He’s not hit the heights of what we expected. He will become a fantastic player, but he’s not had a quick enough impact at Old Trafford.

“Rashford won’t give up easy, Greenwood will persevere – the two of them got on the scoresheet at the weekend.

“There’s going to be a big battle ahead for minutes in those wide areas.”

Sancho is yet to register a goal or assist in the colours of Man United.

The England star has played just 41% of total Premier League minutes so far this season.
