Pundit can't believe Tottenham could sell 'exceptional' Winks to Aston Villa
Noel Whelan has claimed it would be “ludicrous” for Tottenham to sell Harry Winks to Aston Villa this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old is still an “exceptional young player” despite a difficult 2020/21 campaign.
As reported by the Telegraph (June 30th), Winks is one of several midfielders being monitored as Villa look to strengthen in the centre of the pitch.
Meanwhile, The Athletic report (July 3rd) Winks has expressed an interest in leaving Spurs in pursuit of regular game time.
However, Whelan suggested Tottenham would be making a huge mistake letting him leave for a top-flight rival.
“We know the quality because not long ago he was still in the England setup,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“There was lots of speculation about him moving but why would you sell someone that was in the England squad to another Premier League rival? It’s ludicrous.
“He’s a very good player that gets on the ball, comfortable in tight situations and starts moves off.
“Yes, he’s not as creative as some but that’s why you’ve got the front three, to express themselves and do their job.
“There’s no doubt about it in my mind he can control games in that position. Exceptional young player, loads of talent.”
Winks played 30 times across all competitions last season, although he only made nine Premier League starts.
He has made 173 appearances for his boyhood club, while he has 10 caps for England under his belt.
