Pundit claims the 'door is open' for Ryan Sessegnon at Tottenham after 'surprise' development

Noel Whelan has claimed the “door is open” for Tottenham star Ryan Sessegnon to go to the World Cup after Ben Chilwell’s injury.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there could be a “surprise in store” for the 22-year-old if he can perform between now and the squad announcement.

As per the London Evening Standard (4 November), Chelsea left-back Chilwell is expecting to see his World Cup hopes crushed when he has a scan on his injured hamstring.

The 25-year-old pulled up in Champions League action on Wednesday and could face three months on the sideline.

Sessegnon is yet to receive his maiden call-up for the Three Lions but earned 18-caps for Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-21 side between March 2018 and September 2022.

He has started nine times for Conte this term despite competition from Croatia veteran Ivan Perisic.

Whelan claimed the “relentless” schedule is to blame for a raft of injuries in the Premier League.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “The door is open for quite a few players now.

“This is a schedule that has been crammed full of games – the injury list was always going to be a big problem.

“It’s just been relentless, and it’s a massive blow for Chilwell.

“This is an opportunity for someone to come in and showcase their talents now, and possibly be part of something really special.

“It opens the door for Sessegnon. He’ll be thinking that if he can put the performances in over the next two weeks, there could be a surprise in store.”
