Pundit digs at Everton fans after Longstaff bid update

Paddy Kenny can’t understand the backlash from Everton fans as their club targets a move for Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.

The former Leeds United stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider,
has been left baffled by what he’s seen on social media.

On Wednesday (5 January) The Daily Mail reported Everton have had a bid of around £1million rejected for Longstaff, 24.

On 11 August, The Athletic reported Rafa Benitez and Longstaff have maintained regular contact after the former left Newcastle and that the two remain friends.

The midfielder undoubtedly played his best football under Benitez, leading to links with a move to Man United.

Kenny can’t understand why Everton fans are “annoyed” with Benitez’s pursuit of his former player.

“I don’t get why Everton fans would be annoyed with that,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I saw some on social media saying he is essentially just another Tom Davies.

“It’s £1million. That is absolutely nothing these days. He’s a squad player, he’s not a marquee signing.

“Longstaff played his best football under Rafa and I think he would like a few more friends beside him.

“£1million is an absolute snip if you can get him back to how he was playing a few years ago.

“It’s not quite happened for him since Rafa left Newcastle so maybe that is what he needs to restart his career.

“I think it works for everyone and Longstaff probably doesn’t have a future at Newcastle considering all their new money.”

Longstaff has made 13 Premier League appearances this season and has scored once.

He was hauled off after 60 minutes after an ineffective performance against Cambridge in the FA Cup on Saturday (8 January).

In other news, Everton have been tipped to sanction multiple January transfers after a £33m development.
