Alan Hutton has suggested the agent of Kristoffer Ajer has been talking up a move away from Celtic behind closed doors ahead of the winter transfer window.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers and Scotland star believes the Hoops would “seriously” consider an eight-figure offer for the centre-back as he heads into the final 18 months of his contract.
Goal.com report that OGC Nice have set sights on the 22-year-old to replace the injured Dante in January, with Celtic said to have set a £12million price tag on the centre-back’s head.
Ajer has been a standout performer for Celtic this season, with 25 appearances under his belt so far.
Hutton believes the defender’s improved form recently could be due to talk of a possible move away from Parkhead and suggested a £10million-plus bid would tempt the Bhoys into selling.
Asked if Ajer could be on the way next month, Hutton told Football Insider: “That is when you ask yourself, is this why his performances have picked up recently?
“Obviously the January transfer window is just around the corner and there has been a lot of interest from the summer and then now when the window opens again.
“You wonder if that’s somebody been in his ear, saying: ‘Right, it’s time to up your performances, there could be a big move on the cards.’ We’ll have to wait and see.
“I think throughout the time he’s been an excellent player, yes, he’s had dips in form, like everybody, but he has been a top performer for Celtic.
“If we’re talking £10-12million-plus, I think that’s a figure that Celtic will look at and think that that’s a good amount for that player if it does come in. In January, I think that they’ll have to look at it seriously.”
