Noel Whelan has claimed that Celtic will face stiff competition from Tottenham for the signature of Wigan Athletic’s Joe Gelhardt this summer.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, tipped the 18-year-old and his teammate Jensen Weir to leave the DW Stadium this summer.
The Latics confirmed the shock news last week that they had gone into administration and cited the financial impact of the coronavirus as a major factor.
Football Insider understands that the announcement is likely to see Gelhardt’s price tag slashed with the player previously valued at £5million.
The Hoops are interested in the young striker but face competition from numerous Premier League clubs.
When asked by Football Insider if the teenager’s exit was inevitable, Whelan said:
“Gelhardt and Weir, because of the administration, are in a very good position to get a move away from Wigan at the end of the season.
“They are going to have to compete with Tottenham and some other clubs as well.
“These two young players are wanted by some of the top clubs in Britain.
“The club need to take the shackles off and allow these two young players to go. They will get some money back which is needed to help that club survive.”
Gelhardt has scored one goal in his 16 Championship appearances this season but has featured predominantly as a substitute.
Weir, who can play in defence as well as midfield, has been linked with a move to Brighton this summer.
