Rangers could sign Alfie Doughty from Charlton Athletic as a replacement for Borna Barisic, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has suggested the 21-year-old left winger may take the place of the Croatia international if he is sold this summer.

The Athletic report that the Glasgow giants have joined near neighbours Celtic in the hunt for the versatile Doughty as he heads into the final months of his contract at The Valley.

Doughty established himself as a first-team regular during the 2019/20 campaign and started the opening seven games of the current campaign before he was struck down through injury.

With a possible exit on the cards for Barisic this year, Hutton has suggested the Charlton talent could fill the boots of the 28-year-old.

"I think he's a he's an excellent player, he's a great talent, he's also very young, still got a lot to learn," Hutton told Football Insider when asked about Doughty's potential.

"He's left-sided so you wonder if they're looking into the future and thinking: 'Well, maybe Barisic or someone like that could be moving on in the future,' and there's a replacement."

Doughty has a total of three goals and five assists under his belt in 41 senior appearances for Charlton so far.

Meanwhile, Barisic has established himself as a star figure for Steven Gerrard in recent years and has played 92 times in total for the Gers.
