Tottenham may reignite their bid to sign Antonio Rudiger in January, according to Kevin Phillips.
The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said he expects Jose Mourinho to “dive into the market” in January with Rudiger, 27, a potential target.
Football Insider revealed on Monday that the Lilywhites were confident of completing a deal for Rudiger before Chelsea blocked the transfer on deadline-day.
Germany manager Joachim Low revealed that the centre-half “tried everything” to leave Stamford Bridge this summer and now expects the player to exit Chelsea in January.
Rudiger is yet to make an appearance for the Blues this season and has only made the matchday squad for one of their first six games.
When asked by Football Insider whether a move could still happen in the winter window, Phillips said:
“They have made some fantastic signings this summer but I think Mourinho will dive into the market in January so the Rudiger deal could happen then.”
“If you look at the acquisitions Tottenham have made this summer, they have been very good.
“I honestly think Spurs will be challenging in an around that top four and possibly higher. It could be one of those bizarre seasons where anything could happen. It has certainly been the case so far.”
When speaking on Rudiger’s future, Low said: “He tried everything to leave Chelsea because the European Championship is very important to him.
“I think he’ll try to leave again in the winter.”
