Michael Brown insists that West Ham fans should be excited as Said Benrahma closes in on a move from Brentford.
The former Tottenham and Leeds midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Algeria ace will be expected to step straight into the starting XI at the London Stadium ahead of his big-money move.
An issue between the winger and his current club had put the deal in jeopardy but it is understood the problem has been resolved.
Brown admits fans may be questioning whether the money could be spent on defensive reinforcements but insists he will be an exciting addition for David Moyes’ starting XI.
Brown told Football Insider: “He’s a good player, isn’t he? He’s someone that would excite you as a West Ham fan and I think there’s still possible growth there.
“Defensively, at the back end where they’ve been trying to strengthen, it hasn’t happened but if you see value in a player like that – what is he, 25-years-old – looking at the players who have left there for similar money, that’s going to be the money and the going rate.
“If West Ham see that he’s going to be in the team, that’s the one. If they see him just to be around the squad to improve and develop, then the answer would be no, they could spend the money somewhere else.
“If they see him starting in that XI then go and do it.”
Benrahma scored 17 goals and contributed a further 10 assists to help Brentford reach the Champions play-off final last season.
He netted twice against Fulham in the League Cup earlier this month but has not scored or assisted in his two Championship appearances this season.
