Pundit issues 'big' Everton claim after source update on signing Garner

Everton should forget James Garner and move for an experienced Premier League midfielder this month, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, fears it would be “a big jump” for the 20-year-old to join a struggling Toffees side.

Garner is currently on a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest from Manchester United.

An Everton source told Football Insider (7 January) that the club are weighing up a move for the centre-midfielder.

Rafael Benitez is understood to be an admirer of the England Under-21 international, who starred in Forest’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on a potential move for Garner, Phillips said: “I’ve heard a lot about the name.

“But, it’s a big jump from doing well at Forest to playing in a struggling Everton side.

“It would not inspire me if I was a fan. I would be wanting the club to splash the cash to bring in a top Premier League midfielder. Somebody who has played in the league and knows it.

“Yes, Garner has potential and could be a great player for the future but Everton need players for the here and now. I would have go for someone with a bit more experience.”

Garner has contributed one goal and one assist in 22 appearances across all competitions this season.

His contract at Old Trafford runs until the summer of 2024.
