Pundit issues verdict on Everton potentially appointing Potter after what he's told friends

Noel Whelan has claimed Brighton manager Graham Potter would be a “good fit” for Everton.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested the Seagulls are “in a much healthier position” than the Goodison Park club at present.

This site revealed on 17 January that the Toffees are planning to sound out Potter about his interest in replacing the sacked Rafael Benitez.

An Everton source told Football Insider yesterday (18 January) that Potter has informed friends there is “no chance” of him quitting Brighton for the Merseysiders.

Whelan suggested the former Swansea boss won’t be the only manager to “steer clear” of troubled Everton.

“It’d be a good fit for Potter,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But, you have to consider the fact that Brighton are in a much healthier position than Everton from top to bottom.

“When you’re talking about taking over at a new club, it’s not just the players at your disposal – it’s everything that goes with it.

“It’s not like the transfer of a player. This is a manager coming in who will want to feel assured that everything is right above him, from the board to the footballing staff.

“That’s where the risk is. That’s why managers will steer clear. Whether it’s a big or small club, if it’s run properly then you always have a better chance of surviving and being successful.

“I find it very difficult that many top managers will be excited about joining Everton.”

Everton sit 16th in the Premier League.

The Toffees confirmed (18 January) that Duncan Ferguson will take caretaker charge of the club.
