Pundit lambasts 'cringey' Carney Chukwuemeka after Chelsea news

Carney Chukwuemeka’s transfer to Chelsea from Aston Villa is “cringe-worthy”.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Chelsea announced the signing of Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa on Thursday (4 August).

Sky Sports report the deal is worth up to £20million.

This site revealed on 18 July that the young star wanted a wage of £100,000-a-week if he was to renew his contract at Villa Park – an outlay of £5.2million per year.

Wenham rates the signing but was left unimpressed with Chukwuemeka’s “cringeworthy” attempts to leave Villa.

“It’s a continuation of good signings from Chelsea this summer,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Carney has looked fantastic for England Under 19s in their recent success along with Tottenham’s Alfie Devine.

“Chelsea moved quickly to get him when he became available. It was a bit cringe-worthy from Carney, he made it seem like he wouldn’t renew because he wanted first-team football.

“I don’t see any more opportunities for first-team football at Chelsea compared to Aston Villa.

“There was all this nonsense about him supporting Chelsea when he has lived in Birmingham his whole life.

“I think he is a very good signing and I think he will prove to be worth the fee they paid.”

Chukwuemeka was linked with Europe’s elite – Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain were just two clubs to be linked – after he entered the last year of his current deal.

Villa face Bournemouth on Saturday (6 August) in their first Premier League game of the season.
