Pundit lambasts 'embarrassing' Tottenham players amid Conte 'fly-on-the-wall' verdict

Alan Hutton has ripped into the “embarrassing” performances of the squad players at Tottenham after Sunday’s 3-1 win over Morecambe.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Lilywhites were saved by the introduction of Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Oliver Skipp.

As quoted by the Evening Standard on Monday (10 January), Harry Winks revealed there were “a lot of harsh and honest” words in the Spurs dressing room at halftime.

He went on to say the performance “wasn’t good enough” and that there was “nothing to be too happy about”.

Hutton admitted he would have loved to have been a “fly on the wall” of the dressing room at halftime.

He insisted the squad players failed to take their chance to impress.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It was definitely embarrassing. It doesn’t surprise me that Winks has come out and spoke that way.

“I was thinking at halftime I’d like to be a fly on the wall to see what Antonio Conte says to his players.

“How many times does he have to give his squad players, if you want, an opportunity to go and shine and impress. It takes 60 minutes for him to bring on his big guns and for it to change.

“Moura, Kane, Skipp came on and instantly, when they came on, the whole attitude of the team changed. They were aggressive. They were in at people’s feet, making things happen, getting balls in the box. Why?

“If you’re the manager, you’re asking why? It’s obviously because the players that he picked at the start are not good enough. They’re not up to it. They didn’t fancy the fight.

“It doesn’t surprise me Winks wasn’t happy in his interview.”

Spurs went behind just after the half-hour mark against Morecambe.

Goals in the final 16 minutes of normal time sealed victory for the Lilywhites.
