Pundit makes 'perfect' Forshaw claim ahead of Leeds clash against Tottenham

Leeds United duo Adam Forshaw and Kalvin Phillips are the “perfect partnership” to “dominate” the midfield against Tottenham on Sunday, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the injury-hit 30-year-old deserves to keep his place in the side after an “excellent” 90-minute display against Leicester earlier this month.

Forshaw impressed in his first league start for almost 800 days as Leeds drew 1-1 against the Foxes on November 7th.

Speaking after the game and quoted by Leeds Live, manager Marcelo Bielsa said the midfielder’s performance was a “prize for his perseverance” and praised his “physical qualities”.

Forshaw’s return came after a number of limited-minute cameos, including two starts in the League Cup earlier this season.

Whelan backed the 30-year-old to forge a “perfect” understanding with Phillips and secure his starting berth.

“We’re off the back of a brilliant performance against Leicester in a game we should have won,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Is there anyone there who I think deserves to lose their place? Probably not.

“Forshaw definitely deserves to keep his place in the side, I thought he was excellent against Leicester.

“We are going to need him at Tottenham. Leeds United have got to control that midfield area and be competitive in there. Adam and Kalvin gave us that in their last game together.

“I think it’s the perfect partnership to head away to Spurs and try and dominate that area.”

Forshaw’s Leeds United contract expires at the end of this season.

The midfielder joined the Whites from Middlesbrough for a reported fee of £2million in 2018.
