Pundit slams Everton stars amid new rant from Goodison - 'they have let themselves down'

Noel Whelan has insisted Everton stars like James Garner and Tom Davies “let themselves down” during the 4-1 League Cup defeat against Bournemouth on Tuesday (8 November).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the fringe stars “had to produce” in the game in order to stake a claim for their inclusion in Premier League fixtures.

Lampard made 11 changes for the trip to Dean Court on Tuesday but were thrashed by Gary O’Neil’s Bournemouth side – who made nine changes from their last league fixture.

Speaking post-match and quoted by Sky Sports, the Everton boss ripped into the players who are “knocking on the door” for a start.

Lampard insisted he “learned a lot” from the performance and insisted the mistakes on show were the reason why certain players “don’t play so much”.

Among the players coming in was Garner, who was making his first start for Everton since joining from Man United during the off-season.

Whelan suggested Lampard will feel vindicated for continuing to persevere with his first-choice eleven.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think Lampard’s got a point.

“If you’re banging on the door demanding to play, you’ve got to produce – and they didn’t.

“They went out there and let themselves down.

“Lampard will be sitting there, rubbing his hands, and saying ‘well, there you go.’

“They had the opportunity, and they didn’t take it.

“He won’t be happy to have the defeat on his record, but it proves a point to these players.”

Everton have won just one of their last six league games ahead of the mid-season World Cup break.

The Toffees sit two points clear of the relegation zone.
