Pundit suggests behind-the-scenes trouble at Everton after Echo update on Rodriguez
Frank McAvennie insists something has gone “very wrong” behind the scenes at Everton amid the latest on James Rodriguez’s future.
The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest out of Goodison Park.
On 1st August, the Liverpool Echo reported that Rafael Benitez has told Rodriguez he is free to leave if a suitable offer is received this summer.
Rodriguez, 30, has a contract that runs until next summer though the Toffees have the option to trigger a further year.
He only arrived from Real Madrid last summer and impressed in his debut Premier League season, scoring six goals and picking up five assists.
McAvennie is convinced Benitez and Rodriguez must have fallen out if it’s true the playmaker can leave this summer.

“We have no idea what’s going on behind closed doors,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Rafa will always play his best players, that means something else is going on.
“I always thought it was a weird transfer. Maybe he doesn’t suit life on Merseyside.
“Rafa will take no rubbish from anyone, I know that for sure. If he’s not going to play, something has happened.
“Whether it’s a falling out or whatever. It’s a worry because what if someone else does the same?
“A personality clash maybe, it sounds like ‘Something Has Gone Very Wrong’ – Ex-striker baffled by Echo’s update on senior Everton star.”
Benitez has already dipped into the transfer market after taking over from Carlo Ancelotti.
Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend will add more competition to an Everton attack that often lacked inspiration last season.
