Alan Hutton has said that there are "a lot of warning signs" of a potential exit for Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs defender hinted that "something has gone on behind the scenes" with the Frenchman.

A Tottenham source has revealed to Football Insider that Ndombele wants to quit the club before the 31 August cut-off.

It is understood that new boss Nuno Espirito Santo has frozen the Frenchman out as a result.

Hutton praised Ndombele's "fantastic" ability but bemoaned his inconsistency.

He also admitted an exit may be difficult due to his potential price tag.

“You never know what you’re going to get with him," he told Football Insider's Russell Edge.

“Yes, he’s a fantastic player, but you just don’t know whether he will show that when he goes on to the pitch or whether he is going to be lazy.

“It’s very difficult to bring a player like that into the squad.

“He’s not featured in pre-season, he’s nowhere near the first team. There’s a lot of warning signs there that he may be off.

“The only thing I can think of is that they’ve paid a lot of money for him – who’s going to pay that?

“It’s a bit of a strange one, maybe something has gone on behind the scenes. It’s not an ideal situation for Tottenham at the moment.”

Ndombele did not make a single appearance for Tottenham in pre-season.

He was absent for the Premier League opener against Manchester City and was also omitted from Spurs' European squad.
