Pundit verdict on Thiago Alcantara penning new Liverpool contract after club legend's reveal

Frank McAvennie has claimed Thiago Alcantara will not want to sign a new contract at Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Thiago will be “happy” to see out his current deal at Anfield.

The 31-year-old currently has two years left on his contract with the Merseyside club after joining from Bayern Munich in 2020.

Speaking to club media (13 September), Xabi Alonso revealed that he helped convince his fellow Spaniard of a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Alonso said he spoke to Thiago “a lot” when he was considering a move to the English club.

The 40-year-old told Thiago that there was no better place to play football than at Liverpool.

Thiago returned to the Reds’ starting lineup for the 2-1 win over Ajax on Tuesday (13 September) after a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

When asked if Klopp’s side would want to tie down the midfielder on a longer-term deal, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I don’t know because he is 31.

He will be on a good deal so he’ll be happy if he finishes his contract. Then he’ll go somewhere else. He’ll be 33 by the time his contract is up, I think he’ll be ready to go.

If you get two more good years out of Thiago, they’ll be happy. He’s a wonderful talent, he can see things way before everyone else which is great for a player.”

Thiago made 39 appearances for the Reds across all competitions last season.

During those outings he scored two goals and provided five assists.
